Post-Race Analysis:

Middleburg, Virginia - April 21, 2007: Gliding (NZ) won the $75,000 Grade II Temple Gwathmey, the second leg of the Steeplechase Triple Crown, defeating Rare Bush by a half-length in an exciting stretch duel. Gliding had finished a close third behind Orison and Rare Blush in the first leg of the series, but turned the tables on those two in the Temple Gwathmey.

Brigadoon Stable's Gliding settled well back in the field of eight early, moved into contention going down the backstretch the last time but was still second to Rare Blush as those two landed over the second-to-last fence. Gliding and Rare Bush jumped the last hurdle together, but Gliding gradually wore down Rare Brush through the run-in to prevail by a half-length. The final time for the 2 1/4-mile test over a firm Glenwood Park course that included 11 fences was a slow 4:34.20.

The winner was ridden by Jeff Murphy, a 26-year-old transplanted Irishman who picked up his first American stakes win by following orders and simply letting his horse run.

"I had gears, you know?" Murphy told the National Steeplechase Association (NSA) after the race. "That makes things a lot easier out there."

Murphy's victory was not without controversy. Immediately after the race jockey Danielle Hodsdon, who came off Sovereign Duty when he clipped heels with Langburg between the final two fences, and Cyril Murphy, who was aboard Langburg, both claimed foul against Murphy, alleging that he and Gliding had interfered with their mounts. After a lengthy deliberation, both claims of foul were eventually disallowed by the stewards.

"They made us pay for that one, no doubt about that," winning trainer Doug Fout told the NSA after waiting 23 minutes for the decision.

Fout holds Gliding, a 7-year-old gelding who made his American debut last fall, in high esteem: "He has a huge turn of foot," said the conditioner. "This is a nice horse and the best thing about him is he turns off and then makes one big run. That makes him easy to ride and makes him pretty dangerous too."

There will be no Steeplechase Triple Crown winner this year as Orison, the winner of the series' first stage, the Carolina Cup, finished a well-beaten fifth after bobbling badly at the first fence. Rare Bush, who was second in the Carolina Cup, has now finished second in the first two legs of this year's Steeplechase Triple Crown.

The complete order of finish for the Temple Gwathmey is set forth below.
